Franck Moreau, Merivale’s Head Sommelier, has been working with Merivale for the past four and a half years. Hailing from Macon in France’s Burgundy region, Franck is often seen pouring and talking wine at Merivale’s award-winning est. restaurant. Franck oversees the group’s wine list and passes on his deep wine knowledge to a team of top Sommeliers.
Franck Moreau was recently awarded second place at the prestigious Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI) 1st Contest of the Best Sommelier of Asia-Oceania in Osaka, Japan in November 2009.
The second placing completes a superb year for Franck, who was the only Australian to pass the master sommelier’s advance exam in London. He has also been named Sommelier of the Year in the SMH Good Food Guide 2010.
Franck found himself pushed to the limits throughout the competition, which pitted 20 selected sommeliers from 10 countries against each other.
Besides being named overall second place-getter, Franck also won the Sopexa Vin de France section of the competition, which involved 30 written questions on French wines (which Franck thought was the hardest French test he’s ever done) and a blind taste-test. As the winner, Moreau is now the official Ambassador for French Wine in Australia.
